RoselleThe Roselle
The roselle is another plant that can be used to make refreshing drinks. Botanically known as Hibiscus sabdariffa, roselle grows as a shrub with attractive red stems and deeply lobed leaves.

The plant grows up to two metres tall and produces yellow hibiscus-like flowers with dark red centres. After the flowers are pollinated, they fade away and fruit production begins.

With time, one will notice a bright red, crown-like, fleshy calyx that forms around the base of each fruit. The useful part of the roselle is this fleshy calyx which is boiled in water to yield a sourish and deep red beverage.

It is best served chilled and sweetened and is rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and anthocyanins.

The plants can be grown in the ground or containers using well-draining and fertile soil. Roselle thrives when grown under semi-shade or full sun. Plants do get straggly over time and new ones can be started from seeds and stem-cuttings.

If the calyces of the roselle plant are not to be used immediately, they can be harvested, dried and stored in a cool and dry place.

COOL RECIPES!
1. Passion fruit juice can be made by blending fruit pulp and some cold water at low speed. Filter seeds away using a sieve. Add sugar to sweeten the drink and more cold water to achieve the preferred taste. Best served chilled.

2. Make dragon fruit jelly by dropping small cubes of the pulp into agar-agar. Some people mash up the pulp and add that instead. Allow the jelly to set and the dessert is best served chilled.

3. Peel away the ‘skin’ of a fresh Aloe vera leaf and rinse away any green sap using water. Cut the translucent gel into cubes and boil them in water with rock sugar to taste. The dessert is served chilled.

4. Boil one part of roselle calyces in three parts of water to yield a dark red decoction. Filter away the calyces and add sugar to taste. Allow the beverage to cool and serve it chilled.

Aloe VeraThe Aloe Vera
The medicinal aloe, botanically known as Aloe vera or A. barbadensis, is a species of succulent plant that we are all familiar with. A cultivar that is prevalently grown here is Aloe vera var. chinensis, which has numerous white spots on its leaves.

The medicinal aloe is a succulent with a rosette growth habit comprising stiff and fleshy leaves that are studded with white teeth. Mature specimens produce a tall flower spike with pendulous, yellow tubular flowers.

The translucent gel-like substance found inside the leaves of the medicinal aloe is used to treat various skin conditions and injuries. The juice obtained from them is traditionally taken internally to treat digestive problems.

Nowadays, finely cut bits of the gel can be found inside numerous drinks and desserts. The medicinal aloe grows best under direct sun and is a drought-tolerant plant that should be kept on the drier side and grown in well-drained soil.

Harvest the lower and more mature leaves. It is propagated from suckers that appear around the base of a mature plant and can be grown in containers.

Tiny bits of the translucent gel found inside the leaf of the medicinal aloe can now be found as an additive in many beverages right Grow the medicinal aloe plant in a sunny location with well-draining soil to reduce the likelihood of the plant rotting away!

BESIDES beautifying our surroundings and purifying the air that we breathe, the plants that we have at home can also provide us with food and medicine. Here’s a selection of four edible plants that are easy to grow in the garden for their rich source of phytonutrients and health-enhancing properties:

Passion FruitThe Passion Fruit
Passion fruits are popular dessert fruits where the pulp is eaten fresh, together with the seeds, or blended to yield a refreshing beverage.

Passion fruits are rich in vitamins A and C, potassium and dietary fibre. The purple passion fruit, botanically known as Passiflora edulis, is the species that is commonly grown here.

The vine bears round to egg-shaped fruits which turn purple when ripe. It also produces very attractive, large, white flowers with purple centres.

The passion fruit vine, which needs to climb on an outdoor trellis, loves direct sunshine and soil that is moist, well-drained and fertile. Harvest the fruits when they turn purple and wrinkles have appeared on the rind. New plants can easily be propagated from stem-cuttings.

Apartment gardeners who wish to have them at home can also try growing a small vine in a large container under a sunny spot.
Dragon FruitThe Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruits are borne by cactus species that belong to the Hylocereus genus. Hylocereus undatus produces red-skinned fruits with white flesh while those of H. costaricensis have red-skins and red flesh. Hylocereus megalanthus is rarely encountered locally and has white flesh with a yellow skin.

In general, ripe dragon fruits are sweet and low in calories. It is said that the fruits of H. costaricensis are particularly rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, as well as fibre, phosphorus and calcium.

Look out for the large, showy and fragrant flowers of the dragon fruit plant as they open for only one night.

The dragon fruit plant loves the sun. It is large and adopts a sprawling habit and must be given a strong support outdoors to grow on.

New plants are most easily propagated from stemcuttings and prefer to be grown using well-drained and fertile soil that is enriched with organic matter.

In general, ripe dragon fruits are sweet and low in calories

Great Expectation: How To Plan For Your Family’s Future (Part 2/3)

How To Plan For Your Family’s Future (Part 2/3)
No matter what your income level is, early planning for financial security is always the best course of action. Here, some tips on how to get started!

Family’s FutureClick here to read Part 1

FIVE TIPS TO BASIC FINANCIAL PLANNING FOR YOUR FAMILY

TIP 1: PREPARE AND STICK TO A FAMILY BUDGET TO KEEP EXPENSES IN CHECK

A budget is a useful tool for families to monitor their income and expenses. Without a budget, we may not be able to keep track of the many bills and expenses we incur.

Steps to prepare a family budget:
1. Create a list of all monthly income, e.g. salary and wages.
2. Create a list of planned or targeted expenses and a list of all actual monthly expenses. If an expense is not incurred monthly, pro-rate it on a monthly basis.
3. Set aside a fixed amount of savings every month. You should aim to save at least 10 per cent of your monthly income and have savings equivalent to six months of your salary as emergency funds at any point in time.
4. Make sure your expenses and the amount set aside for savings do not exceed your income. If you are overspending, reduce your expenses accordingly.
5. Review your budget regularly.

You may also wish to consider involving your family members in drawing up the family budget so that it becomes a shared responsibility.

TIP 2: DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN “NEEDS” AND “WANTS”
Our decision to spend is usually motivated by “needs” and “wants”. “Needs” relate to the essentials in life, something you cannot live without, e.g. rent or mortgage or food. “Wants” are usually things that we desire, such as the latest IT gadget or a new fancy handbag. Do a reality check before taking the plunge. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do we really need the item?
2. Is it worth waiting and saving up for?
3. Is there a cheaper alternative?

TIP 3: IDENTIFY FINANCIAL PRIORITIES
Priorities change at different life stages. For example, a family with young children may have the following priorities:
1. Ensuring sufficient income to maintain household expenses
2. Saving for the children’s education
3. Retirement planning

Do review your priorities regularly, especially at different stages of your life and whenever your family circumstances change. These could include events such as starting work, getting married, buying a home, having children or reaching retirement.

TIP 4: TRANSLATE PRIORITIES INTO FINANCIAL GOALS
Once we have identified our priorities, we can proceed to take steps to make them our financial goals. For each goal, determine how much funds you need to accumulate and the time available to accumulate the funds.

For example, if your priority is to ensure adequate income for your family in case of unexpected events, you may wish to review your insurance policies and calculate the optimal level of insurance coverage required.

Similarly, if your goal is to save for your children’s education needs, you may wish to start by projecting how much tuition fees might be by the time your children start university and the time available to accumulate such funds.

NEXT: TIP 5 – TAKE CONCRETE STEPS TO ACHIEVE YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS

Expert Advice on table Setting

Setting It Right
Time to unpack your fanciest bone china and shiniest silverware
to glam up that special night of romance

IT'S global recession and you have important guests flying in town. How would you like to entertain them? Dining at a five-star restaurant may be tasty but it certainly is not tasteful. So, why don't you just entertain at home? If you have no time to attend a crash cooking class, you can always hire good catering service. Just remember to bring out your best china and flatware to make your guests feel truly important.

FOR A FORMAL SETTING:

1) A service plate always acts as the centre of the setting.

2) A soup bowl is placed on top of the service plate.

3) A napkin is always balanced on the rim of the soup bowl or placed on the left of the forks.

4) Forks are placed left of the plate.

5) Knives are placed on the right, with the sharp edge of their blades facing the plate.

6) Spoons are on the right of knives. From left to right: dinner knife, teaspoon, dinner spoon, soup spoon

7) Dessert cutlery is placed horizontally above the service plate.
a. The handle of a dessert fork should face the prongs of other forks.
b. A dessert spoon, if needed, should be placed above the dessert fork in the opposite direction.

8) Beverage glasses should be placed above the knives and spoons.
a. A water goblet should always be placed on the most left, closest to the service plate.
b. If you are serving more than one kind of wine, glasses are placed in service order from left to right:
| water goblet, Chardonnay wine glass, Bordeaux wine glass, and champagne flute.

9) A bread and butter plate should be placed above the forks with a butter knife lying across it.
The featured formal setting would suit a five-course dinner that includes:
a. Soup, served with warm bread and butter
b. Pasta/rice course
c. Entrée
d. Dessert
e. Coffee/Tea

RULES OF THUMB:

• If possible, all dishware and cutlery should be positioned on a placemat.

• The service plate will act as an under-plate for the dishware of all courses served before the entrée. The plate is then replaced by the entrée when it is served.

• Remember that cutlery is used from the outside in. Cutlery used for the first dish should always be placed furthest from the service plate. For example, if you have a salad and a fish course before your entrée, your cutlery should be placed from left to right in this order: salad fork, fish fork, dinner fork; dinner knife, fish knife, salad knife.

• All utensils should be equidistant from each other and their handles should be straight and level.

Securing The Home…And Peace Of Mind

The importance of home security can never be overemphasised and goes beyond the brick-and-mortar of our house. We hear from Corinna Choong, Senior Vice President, Group Marketing & Communications of Certis CISCO, on how to keep me and mine safe and sound.

By Nadya Huang | Photos courtesy of Certis Cisco | reprinted with permission from "Expert Advise" by Home Concepts magazine

WHAT BASIC FEATURES SHOULD A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM HAVE?
For homes, a security system with an intrusion detection feature is a must-have. The system will be triggered if a door or window is tampered with. Some homeowners may install a CCTV to monitor home situations where there are elderly parents, young children and maids.

A sound home security solution should give you round-the-clock protection, monitoring against break-ins, fire and other dangers. Linked to Certis CISCO’s 24-hour alarm monitoring centre, our home security solution has the following features:

• Signage (Deters burglars)
• Siren (Alerts your neighbours and discourages further attempts)
• Alarm monitoring (Notifies you and sends help when alarms are set off)
• Duress alarm (Enter a duress code instead of the access code to disable the alarm; a duress signal is sent to the centre for help)
• Smoke detector (Alerts you to a fire when you are home; ensures the SCDF is notified promptly)
• Panic alarm (Sends a signal to the centre when activated via the control panel/key fob. Help will then be sent your way)
• Pendant panic button (Ideal for the elderly or infirm; can be clipped onto clothing or mounted by the bedside)

WHICH ARE CURRENTLY THE MOST COMMON AND POPULAR SECURITY GADGETS?
For homes, the most common and popular security gadgets would include RFID readers, card readers, PIN readers, and magnetic locks for doors and alarms.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON MYTHS ABOUT HOME SECURITY? DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED ENOUGH ABOUT HOME SECURITY?
There is a general complacency and mindset that “it will not happen to me”. As Singapore, by world standards, is still relatively safe, Singaporeans may not be overly concerned about home security. But we do see an upward trend of people seeking professional advice and service to safeguard their home and loved ones.

HOW DO YOU THINK HOME SECURITY TRENDS ARE GOING TO CHANGE? WHICH IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT?
I believe that homeowners will benefit through education and awareness of the crime situation and that cost-effective solutions are available. With greater education and awareness, homeowners will be more likely to invest in home security systems to protect their loved ones and home.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF THE PERSON INSTALLING OUR SYSTEM IS TRUSTWORTHY?
Engage a reputable security company. Such organizations will have strict selection criteria for technicians and engineers. For example, at Certis CISCO, our engineers are recruited through a rigorous selection process. When [they] conduct site surveys or install systems, customers can verify their identities through uniforms and the company-issued photo ID. Upon installation, our engineers will always advise customers to change the default password to a personalized one.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE MAINTAIN OUR SECURITY SYSTEM?
Home security systems should be periodically tested to ensure they are in good working condition. As good practice, security systems need to be maintained every six months.
OTHER MEASURES TO TAKE TO MAXIMISE HOME SECURITY

• Avoid being complacent and be vigilant of and report suspicious characters loitering in the vicinity of your home to the police

Cut Cost and Save It For The Trips

All of us would want to save for possible trips this summer season, also to have that a little of that disposable income to do what we want.
By: Lawrence

It's nice to have this quality time eating out on good restaurants once in a while with our family or special someone. It also feels good to have this simple freedom of treating them either coming from our bonus or simple savings. We can lessen our expenses by noting these reminders on saving on our electric bills.

First would be keeping our home appliances well maintained. Household appliances operate more efficiently and use less energy when it is in good working condition. One should know its limits and give it proper cleaning.

When shopping for a new refrigerator, one should choose energy efficient refrigerators. Check the label attached to the refrigerator, units that have a higher Energy Efficiency Factor are more energy efficient and cost less to operate. Newer refrigerator models use 30% less electricity than those built 10 years ago and newer models usually use less as companies now go eco-friendly. A 4-tick refrigerator saves you about $130 a year over a 1-tick mode. Similarly a 4-tick air-conditioner saves you about $460 in electricity bills a year in comparison to a 1-tick model.

Upon shopping for a new appliance have this insight. Think of two price tags of the appliance, the first price would be the purchase price and then think it as a down payment. Then the second price would be the price tag of how much cost the product will yield during its lifetime of service. You'll be paying on that second price tag every month with your utility bill for the next 10 to 20 years. Refrigerators usually last an average of 20 years while air conditioners and dishwashers last for 10 years while clothes washers for about 14 years so weigh it well.

Lastly, home lighting costs about 20% to 30% of one’s electric bill so make sure that it provides direct lighting on needed spots and attain a habit of turning it off when not using . This also goes true with monitors, televisions sets and other general appliances. One must remember to opt compact fluorescent lamp and switch off home appliances at the power socket as standby power can account for up to 10% of one home's electricity use.

In times of recession, one must learn how to adapt and have a better allotment of our resources. Would it be nice to have these simple savings and use it for persons that truly matters.
